How to Monetize your Content: Is Monetization Really for Me?

How to Monetize your Content: Is Monetization Really for Me?

October 10, 2022

Setting up a source of passive income is everyone's dream. And some people have accomplished that goal thanks to the internet, where the content they create and manage provides them with a very decent amount every month.

However, it's not as simple as it sounds to make money out of the net. It requires work. HARD WORK, actually. It will require you to turn your hobby into your passion and let it drive your focus.

That's why not everyone is built for Content Monetization, but with the power of will, anyone can achieve the dream of a nice bank balance.

You have to start by asking you three simple questions:

  • Do I have an ability, knowledge or passion that I truly enjoy and am I willing to turn it into a side business?
  • Am I a patient person that won't quit even if the money doesn't come as quickly as I expected or thought it would?
  • Do I have a specific goal and know to set tactics and strategies that will help me reach it?

It's not enough to answer YES to just one of these questions, you have to be committed to EVERYTHING all of them imply.

Some research suggests about 70% of bloggers make less than $5,000 a year, although most of the new creators quit before actually seeing any earnings. Also, just 21% of those bloggers are spending more than 30 hours working on content creation for their blog.

So, besides knowing about a specific niche, you have to have the time to invest in making your platform grow. It can be a blog, just like in those examples, but it could also be a YouTube or Tiktok channel, an Instagram or DeviantArt account. You name it. Your passion's what will determine where you'll shine as a Creator.

If you manage to steadily grow that platform and ensure a great level of engagement with your audience (every platform is measured differently), then you're half-way there. This is where patience kicks in. No matter how slow it seems to rise, you shouldn't quit if you see you're making progress.

And, last but not least, accept the fact that tackling the monetization game will demand a lot (and we mean A LOT) of your time. This doesn't mean you'll be permanently attached to your platform (automatization tools can help you here), but that you have to be as productive as possible to see any kind of growth altogether.

Some food for thought here. And in case you need a quick reminder, here's a TL;DR to know if monetization is compatible with you. You just need to:

  • Have a high level of experience in a niche or field
  • Have already set an online platform where you share that passion with the world
  • Have built an audience who trusts your POV and usually engages in conversation with you
  • Have the time and commitment to make that platform grow and become an extra income source

Content Monetization comes in different shapes and sizes nowadays: from YouTube Ad Revenues to Online Courses Selling or Partnership Programs (like the Kosmonaut Program, from Kosmic Dust that can help you boost your monthly earnings by sharing with your audience the Kosmic Love!).
