The variety of what people bring to the table in discussions of consciousness is amazing, and it's perplexing to think that we're all talking about the same thing (though sometimes it turns out we aren't) I do think that the materialist or the physicalist isn't saying something very different from a spiritualist in saying that we are nothing but matter: they feel and experience the non-physicality of the self, but see that that non-physicality arises from physicality just as patterns emerge and transcend all systems. I do believe we can conceive of consciousness, emotional experience, and beauty in terms of evolutionary advantage. our "self" is a virtual space to conceive and process information across the brain, a development which would certainly help us evolutionarily. like I said, we must not really be saying anything very different at all, after all, (we assume) we are all experiencing things in a very similar way. I must confess I have a blog that I would love for you to check out at some point. I discuss a lot of these issues of consciousness, especially as it relates to the technological singularity. I also have a discussion of how psychedelics have affected my thinking on these matters (I haven't tried DMT but I'm open to that experience). anyway, come and visit psychesingularity.wordpress.com when you have the time.
